The Fargo Native American Commission will host a community event, “Remember the Hearts of Our Women” in recognition of Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women Awareness Day on Wednesday, February 14, 2018, at 11 a.m. at the Fargo City Commission Chambers, 200 3rd Street North. The event will feature performances by Jingle Dress dancers, which signify healing for all; guest speakers including Fargo City Commissioners, Spirit Lake Nation Chairwoman Myra Pearson, Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate Chairman Dave Flute and JT Shining One Side; and a reading from a child whose mother was murdered. After the speakers, there will be a walk/march through downtown Fargo that will end back at the City Commission Chambers. At the conclusion of the event, a meal will be provided. The event is free and open to the public.

In 2015, the cities of Moorhead, Dilworth, Fargo and West Fargo joined efforts to spur awareness in the region for murdered and missing Indigenous women through a proclamation designating February 14 as Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women Awareness Day. This effort calls upon citizens to observe this day with appropriate programs and activities.

The Fargo Native American Commission works to strengthen the Native American community to promote understanding, recognition and respect for cultures and to enrich the community as a whole.
