For the last five months, contractors for North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) and City of Fargo have completed multiple phases of the second and final year of the Main Avenue makeover, and work is nearing completion. The roadway is expected to open to all traffic on Sunday, September 6. The contractor, Dakota Underground, is more than one month ahead of schedule for finishing this last phase of 2020 work.

By late afternoon Sunday, crews will open the final section of Main Avenue between 8th Street and the 10th Street South underpass bridge to traffic. Motorists and pedestrians will encounter:

  • Main Avenue between Broadway to University Drive OPEN to east – west traffic
  • University Drive counterflow lane OPEN to northbound traffic
  • Shared use path OPEN throughout the corridor on both sides of Main Avenue

“As the two-year Main Avenue makeover project comes to an end, we want to thank the public and all businesses located throughout the corridor for their patience as we worked diligently and efficiently to improve this corridor,” said Joe Peyerl, assistant district engineer, NDDOT. “The success of this project is due to the collaboration and coordination of many entities all working together with one goal in mind.”

This year’s $11.5 million reconstruction improved roadway conditions and underground utilities through the Main Avenue corridor between Broadway and University Drive. Additionally, the project added 50 on-street parallel parking spaces on both sides of the street. The newly reconstructed section of roadway will now operate as a three-lane arterial road between Broadway and 9th Street, transitioning into to a 4-lane section between 9th Street and 11th Street, and a 5-lane section west of 11th Street. A counterflow lane was also added on University Drive between Main Avenue and NP Avenue North to offer another north railroad underpass crossing.
