The Fargo Fire Department Encourages Residents to Participate in Fire Prevention Week

“Charge into Fire Safety!” campaign highlights safe use of lithium-ion batteries

10/03/2025

The Fargo Fire Department encourages community members to participate in Fire Prevention Week from October 5-11. This is part of a nationwide effort, which is united under the campaign “Charge into Fire Safety!” The campaign aims to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe. More information on the broader campaign can be found at FirePreventionWeek.org.

Most of the electronics we use in our homes every day – smartphones, tablets, power and lawn tools, laptops, e-cigarettes, headphones, toys and other devices – are powered by lithium-ion batteries. In fact, most everything that’s rechargeable uses this type of battery.

If not used correctly or if damaged, lithium-ion batteries can overheat, start a fire or even explode. To reduce these risks, look around your home – it’s important to know which devices are powered by them. This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign helps people understand the importance of using these batteries correctly to prevent fires in the home and encourages everyone to follow the “Buy, Charge and Recycle Safely” approach.

The Fargo Fire Department wants to share these key safety tips and guidelines for devices powered by lithium-ion batteries:

• Buy only listed products. Look for a label from a nationally recognized testing lab on the packaging and product, which means that it meets important safety standards.

• Charge devices safely. Use the cords that came with the product. If you need a new charger, buy one from the manufacturer. Don’t charge under pillows or on beds where the battery can build up heat. Unplug the battery once it is fully charged.

• Recycle batteries responsibly. Don’t throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash. Visit Call2Recycle.org to find a spot near you.
