FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA – The Fargo Police Department’s Academy Class IX officially began training on Tuesday, January 20, welcoming nine new recruits to the department.

Chosen from a competitive field of 143 applicants, Class IX reflects a diverse group of recruits from four states (North Dakota, Minnesota, Arizona and Texas), including five with military service experience. These recruits bring a wide range of backgrounds and experiences that will enhance the department’s ability to effectively serve and engage with the Fargo community.

The Fargo Police Academy delivers 720 hours of comprehensive training, significantly exceeding the 400 hours required by the North Dakota Peace Officer Standards and Training (ND POST) Board. This rigorous curriculum provides recruits with the foundational knowledge and practical skills necessary for today’s law enforcement environment. Following graduation, recruits transition into a 16-week Police Training Officer (PTO) program, where they receive structured, hands-on training alongside experienced FPD officers.

Unlike traditional academies, the Fargo Police Academy employs recruits from day one, allowing them to earn a salary while completing their training. Upon successfully passing the ND POST licensing exam, graduates are eligible to serve as licensed peace officers with The Fargo Police Department.

Academy instruction covers a broad range of topics, including constitutional law, crime scene investigation, defensive tactics, de-escalation, emergency vehicle operations (EVOC), firearms training and more. A distinguishing feature of the Fargo Police Academy is its hands-on, in-house approach, with instruction led primarily by FPD officers, detectives and supervisors who provide direct mentorship and real-world insight.

“Our in-house academy prepares recruits for the job by immersing them in the culture and values of The Fargo Police Department,” said Police Chief Dave Zibolski. “Recruits receive evidence-based training, develop critical skills and gain a strong understanding of modern policing. We place a strong emphasis on community partnerships, delivered in our own unique way. The Fargo Way.”

The Fargo Police Department’s Training and Development Unit oversees the academy and remains committed to providing high-quality, ongoing education for all department personnel. Through continuous training initiatives, the unit ensures officers remain equipped with current strategies, best practices and the skills needed to effectively serve the community.
