Events Planned Throughout the Community to Celebrate Earth Week

Residents are encouraged to enjoy environmentally friendly activities April 20-25

The City of Fargo invites residents to celebrate Earth Week, April 20-25, by participating in a variety of green, earth-friendly activities throughout the community.

Earth Week News Conference
In recognition of Earth Week, the cities of Fargo, Moorhead, West Fargo and Dilworth, along with Clay County Solid Waste, will hold a news conference on Wednesday, April 22, at 10 a.m. at the new Resource Recovery Center at 3322 15th Ave. N. in Moorhead. Facility tours will be offered, highlighting the commercial garbage tipping floor, household hazardous waste facility, public recycling and garbage drop-off, and the reuse room.

MATBUS – Get Your “Can” on the Bus
Celebrate Earth Week with MATBUS and Get Your “Can” on the Bus from Monday, April 20, to Saturday, April 25. On those days, you can ride MATBUS fixed-route vehicles for free when you recycle one empty aluminum can on the bus. All collected cans will be recycled, with the proceeds donated to a local charity.

The City of Fargo Poster Contest
The City of Fargo is hosting its annual poster contest at Jefferson Elementary School, with the theme “Our Power, Our Planet.” The winning classroom will get to have pizza with Fargo Mayor Dr. Tim Mahoney. The poster will appear on a billboard in Fargo during the month of May.

Fargo Public Library Events
Learn how to design and plant your own prairie garden with experts from the United Prairie Foundation, a nonprofit group based in Sheldon, North Dakota. This free workshop is set for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21, at the downtown Main Library. Participants will learn to grow plants from seeds for pollinator and wildlife habitat. The United Prairie Foundation has contributed to prairie restoration projects in Fargo, such as the Urban Plains Park. Free seed packets will be distributed; no registration is required. The Dr. James Carlson Library will host an open-house session featuring earth-friendly crafts on Wednesday, April 22, from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Stop in and make a beeswax food wrap or a pinecone bird feeder. MinnKota Recycling
From April 20 through May 2, MinnKota Recycling is paying a premium price for all aluminum cans: $0.70 per pound for 1-99 pounds. If residents have over 100 pounds, MinnKota is offering $0.73 per pound. For anything more than 500 pounds, $0.75 per pound will be offered. In addition to aluminum, MinnKota pays for select recyclables. Visit MinnKotaRecycling.com to learn more about hours and locations.

River Keepers Events
The nonprofit group River Keepers will host a make-your-own compost tumbler workshop on Tuesday, April 21, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at M.B. Johnson Park in Moorhead. Be ready to take home an empty 55-gallon barrel. A class fee of $59 includes supplies. Pre-registration is required through Moorhead Community Education (limited spots available).

River Keepers will hold its annual meeting on Wednesday, April 22, at 5:30 p.m. at Xcel Energy in the Black Building on Broadway in Fargo. New board members will be elected at this free event. Audubon Great Plains will lead a Red River Water Festival activity, "Mallard Migration Game: Healthy Wetlands," which simulates ducks migrating and using wetlands for food, water and nesting grounds.

MSUM Earth Day Celebration
Minnesota State University Moorhead’s Sustainable Students Association will host its annual Earth Day Celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, April 24, on the south patio of Comstock Memorial Union. This event brings together students, community members and local organizations to raise environmental awareness and focus on practical sustainability. Businesses and groups of all kinds are welcome to participate.

Red River Zoo – Party for the Planet
The Red River Zoo’s Party for the Planet on Saturday, April 25, will feature conservation activity stations, environmental demonstrations and educational presentations. This fun day of earth-friendly activities will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit RedRiverZoo.org for more details.

Healthcare Equipment Recycling
The Healthcare Equipment Recycling Organization (HERO) is seeking donations of healthcare equipment and supplies that can be sanitized, refurbished and redistributed locally and globally. For more information, visit HeroFargo.org.
