Smokeless Tobacco Users Encouraged to Quit During ‘Through With Chew’ Week

Smokeless tobacco users encouraged to set February 20, Great American Spit Out, as their quit date

Fargo Cass Public Health (FCPH) encourages residents to take the first step toward quitting smokeless tobacco during ‘Through with Chew Week,’ February 16 - 22. Additionally, individuals who use smokeless tobacco are encouraged to set February 20, the Great American Spit Out, as their quit date.

Smokeless tobacco and oral nicotine products, such as nicotine pouches and dissolvables, are not harmless. Both contain nicotine, a highly addictive chemical. The use of smokeless tobacco increases the risk of serious health conditions, including oral cancer, gum disease, tooth decay, heart disease, and stroke.

“It starts with day one, and from there, small steps can lead to quitting for good,” said Larry Anenson, Director of Health Promotion for FCPH. “Making the decision to quit is a great first step, and we can help by assisting individuals in identifying and avoiding tobacco use triggers during events and everyday activities.”

According to 2022 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of adults in North Dakota who currently use smokeless tobacco is greater than the national average—6.5% compared to 3.4%. Developing a personalized treatment and recovery plan, along with setting a quit date, can significantly improve a tobacco user’s chances of success.

FCPH offers the Break Away from Nicotine (BAN) program, which provides individualized support and resources for Cass County residents over the age of 18 who are ready to quit. Additionally, NDQuits offers free statewide support through phone and web-based coaching programs.

Quitting smokeless tobacco offers numerous health benefits, including reducing the risk of developing oral cancer, improving gum health, lowering blood pressure, and enhancing overall well-being. Breaking free from nicotine dependence can also improve energy levels, enhance the sense of taste and smell, and set a positive example for others.
