Amplified Sound Permit

City of Fargo Municipal Code 11-0209: No person shall use or maintain any sound-amplifying equipment outdoors without first having obtained a permit.

A complete application for a permit must be submitted to the chief of police or his authorized designee in a form established by the chief of police, along with a non-refundable fee that has been established by resolution of the board of city commissioners. The application must be made at least 30 days in advance of the requested permit date unless a waiver is granted by the chief of police.

The following regulations apply to all permits issued pursuant to Section 11-0209

  • The only sound permitted shall be music or human speech or both.
  • No permits shall be issued for any property located within a residential zoning district. For the purpose of this section, the Downtown Mixed-Use Zoning District is not considered residential.
  • Permits are valid for the day or days listed on the permit only.
  • Permits issued for any property where the source of the sound is located within 500 feet of a residential zoning district shall be valid for no longer than one day.
  • With respect to any permit for a property where the source of the sound is within 500 feet of a residential zoning district, no more than one permit may be issued every 30 days.

Amplified Sound Permit Application

Special Events-Street Closing-Block Party Permit

Parties wishing to host a special event in The City of Fargo that requires a street closing must fill out the Special Event Permit request and submit it to the City of Fargo Engineering Department no later than 45 days prior to the event. If you are requesting to block a street, two barricades at each end of the block will be required to discourage vehicular traffic. Four barricades will be required, and the requesting party is responsible for making arrangements through The City of Fargo Street Department by calling 701.241.1453.

The City of Fargo requires certain events to obtain insurance prior to approval. Those events include parades and/or other mobile events utilizing the City of Fargo streets event open to the public with the expectation of a large number of attendees, events including exotic animals and any other events deemed necessary by the City of Fargo.

  • Requests to close major thoroughfares may not be approved.
  • No bands or amplified music will be allowed at block parties.
