Fargo Public Library at 125 Years – Building on a Legacy of Service
For over 125 years, the Fargo Public Library has been a free and open space for area residents to gather, read, and learn. Today, the Fargo Public Library system consists of the Main Library, the Dr. James Carlson Library branch and the Northport Library branch.
We invite you to celebrate our legacy of service to the community as we celebrate the Library's 125th Anniversary. To mark this milestone, several related events are planned, and residents are cordially invited to attend.
*The library's 125th Anniversary event series is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Fargo Public Library.

Saturday, Feb. 28 – Main Library at 2 p.m. - Pioneering Public Libraries in North Dakota
In 1889, industrialist Andrew Carnegie called public libraries “the best gift that can be given to a community;” he believed through hard work and education everyone could improve their lives. North Dakotans overwhelmingly agreed. This talk, presented by Dr. Ashley Baggett, Associate Professor of History at NDSU, focuses on North Dakota’s pioneer spirit that shaped the construction of these libraries- most notably the value of community as locals banded together to raise funds, donate books, and train to work in the newly created profession of librarianship. Open to all ages, for details call Lori at 701.476.5977.
Tuesday, March 24 – Main Library at 6:30 p.m.
